Five candidates are vying to replace outgoing Councilwoman Mary Alice Cisneros in District 1.
The race offers some of the strongest choices in the May 14 election, but only one can win.
We recommend that voters cast their ballots for DiegoBernal.
The 34-year-old Jefferson High School graduate earned a master’s degree in social work and a law degree from the University of Michigan. He then returned to the Alamo City to take a job with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
After more than six years with MALDEF, Bernal recently went into private practice. His legal career advocating for civil rights has been excellent job preparation for serving an inner-city district.
Bernal’s candidacy is a continuation of the public service path he has walked in his career.
Additionally, he is a musician and advocate of the arts.
Bernal brings a deep understanding of San Antonio as well as an energetic, positive attitude to the table.
Also in the race are Carolyn Kelley, Chris Forbrich, Ralph Medina and Lauro A. Bustamante.
Kelley is a former president of the Tobin Hills Neighborhood Association; Forbrich is a small businessman seeking the seat for a seond time; and Medina is a retired firefighter.
Bustamante, who has sought numerous offices in the past, was elected to the Edwards Aquifer Authority board in November. The fact that he already is seeking another position only months after being sworn in demonstrates a disturbing lack of commitment to the public service job that voters gave to him last year.
Bustamante shouldn’t have sought the EAA post if he didn’t really want to do the important work on that board.
