Lambda Condemns White Civil Rights Rally in Washington DC

On Sunday August 12, 2018, White nationalist groups are expected to convene for a “white civil rights rally” throughout the perimeters of Lafayette Square in our nation’s capital. Amidst the anniversary of the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, discrimination and political unrest continues to incite violence in many sectors of our country. Counter-protestors and other groups denouncing White nationalists are expected to be at the rally. As these toxic acts of hatred continue to negatively affect all diverse communities in the U.S., Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc., condemns this protest and its organizer, Jason Kessler, for provoking constant attacks of hatred, bigotry and ferocity against marginalized communities. An advisory to all brothers and their respective families is warranted as this event approaches. Thus, it is important to remain vigilant and safe as you navigate different spaces in our nation.

As leaders of this fraternal brotherhood, we must remain united to survive and resist hate. In doing so, we will be able to fight against the reoccurring traumatic experiences of oppression that has plagued our cultural identity and values for many years. Thus, grounding ourselves in our values we remain vigilant and ultimate protectors of our familia, cultura, espiritu, comunidad y hermandad—family, culture, spirit, community and brotherhood.

In trying times of resistance and hope, remember the following:

  1. Stay connected to individuals who affirm your cultural identity.
  2. Listening to your intuitive cultural suspicion of white supremacy and other oppressive systems has always allowed People of Color to survive even through dark times.
  3. All feelings are acceptable, so give yourself permission to experience injustice.
  4. Validate the experiences of People of Color who are different from you.
  5. Remember that oppressive systems do not determine your worth or humanness.
