Parsippany, NJ — Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. celebrated its 2014 National Convention in style this past weekend (June 19 – 22, 2014) in San Diego, California. The Fraternity enjoyed a number of milestones throughout the weekend, including:
LARGEST ATTENDANCE
While last year’s conference in New Orleans counted a record attendance, it was broken by this year’s National Convention with nearly 300 alumni and undergraduate brothers.
ADDRESS FROM SENATOR MENENDEZ
Senator Robert Menendez addressed Lambda Theta Phi at the Presidential Awards Dinner, encouraging the organization to continue building the Latino community as he and the Senate continue to push for comprehensive immigration reform.
ADDRESS FROM COUNCILMAN ALVAREZ
San Diego’s District 8 Councilman David Alavarez also addressed the Brotherhood. Councilman Alvarez welcomed brothers to San Diego and inspired them to continue to lead Latinos and the Latino Greek Movement into the future as the Brotherhood embraces the challenges of immigration reform and civil and human rights.
LAMBDA CON APP
LambdaCon debuted last year at the New Orleans Conference, but was only available to iPhone users. This year marked the release of a dual iOs/Android compatible version of the app, enhancing the organization’s ability to communicate with brothers in San Diego. The app was developed internally by Assistant Director of Information Technology, Steve Hernandez (Beta Gamma, Fall 2002), and usage statistics indicate the app was used even more than last year.
FOCUS ON RECRUITMENT
With campuses beginning to increase member count requirements, the National Executive Board moved to supercharge chapter recruitment expertise by bringing in Tina VanSteenbergen of Phired Up Productions to introduce the Dynamic Recruitment strategy. Brothers walked away with interactive training, a starting plan for their chapter and access to numerous recruitment resources on the Phired Up website.
NATIONAL SALUTE COMPETITION
San Diego brought out the best salutes from across the country on Thursday night in Liberty Hall. Beta Alpha Chapter was able to secure the title of 2014 National Salute Competition Champions and the new national trophy.
NEW NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY
After many years of supporting the American Heart Association, the National Board elected to select a new philanthropy in keeping with the Fraternity’s values of advancing the Latino community. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) was announced as the Fraternity’s new philanthropic and service partner at the Presidential Awards Dinner on Saturday, June 21, 2014. More details about this new partnership will be announced next month.
PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS DINNER
Lambda Theta Phi held it’s annual Presidential Awards Dinner at the Liberty Station Courtyard Marriott Hotel on Saturday evening, where 11 awards were given to individual brothers and entities from within the Fraternity. Award winners will be announced in a separate press release.
NATIONAL ELECTIONS
The National Convention is the occasion in which Lambda Theta Phi elects its new National Executive Board to serve the next two-year term. The elections were organized by the National Election Committee with continuous oversight and involvement of the Board of Trustees. The results of the election will be announced in a separate press release.
OMEGA LAMBDA CEREMONY
Lambda Theta Phi inducted its first line of brothers into Omega Lambda Chapter, designed to remember and recognize our brothers who have passed away. The ceremony was designed and led by National Vice President Jarrod Cruz (FB Gamma Gamma, Spring 2002), assisted by Founding Fathers Agustín García and Rinaldo Lago. Seventeen brothers were memorialized in this inaugural ceremony.

Founded on December 1, 1975 at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. is the first nationally recognized Greek-letter organization founded as a Latin fraternity.
