‘Hard work’ propels upstart in District 1

Civil rights lawyer Diego Bernal proved Saturday that a political neophyte can run for City Council with almost no name recognition or money and overcome opponents with both.
Bernal, 34, sailed to victory in his runoff against retired firefighter and one-time front-runner Ralph Medina. Walking into his victory party, Bernal thanked his opponent for “a good and competitive, spirited race” and said the city’s first responders will have a friend and ally in the District 1 office.
“I’m really very humbled that people put their trust in me, and I’m excited about the opportunity,” Bernal said. “I think that this district needs a very diverse and aggressive City Council office, and I’m more than ready to lead that charge.”
