Black History Month: Reclaiming and Honoring Historic Realities

Frederick Douglass, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Hattie McDaniel, Malcolm X, and Sojourner Truth, to name a few, are some of the most iconic Black and African American figures who are celebrated and honored throughout February, Black History Month. Preceding, the story of Black History begins in 1619 when the violent act of slavery was brought to America. Since then, post-1915, approximately half a century after slavery was abolished in the United States, separate but equal laws, voting rights, the creation of the NAACP, civil rights and the notable “I Have a Dream” speech, all marked pivotal transformations in U.S. history. Thus, in honor of this month, the sacrifices made by many Black social justice activists and advocates remind us of the constant struggles that were endured to obtain freedom and equality for all. To continue raising awareness on Black heritage and current issues, the brothers of #LambdaThetaPhiLatinFraternityInc honor and celebrate the cultural traditions, values, and strengths of Black and African Americans. Through a social justice perspective, Black History Month gives us all a perspective on positive Black racial/ethnic identity, cultural values, generational lineage, ancestry and indigeneity, extended cross-cultural kin, language, familial principles, communal resources, flexible roles, spiritual beliefs and practices, political orientations, social class levels, and outstanding educational achievements. To further enhance our engagement with social justice and diversity, the Lambdas invite you all to reflect, celebrate, and honor Black and African American legacy which reminds us to always work together and love together (#COSA, 2019).
